Institutionalising Luxury Hospitality through the Andrew Tan
The Provenance of Leadership: The Andrew Tan's Professional Record
The efficacy of this model is fundamentally anchored in the professional evolution of Andrew Tan. His trajectory is a study in the strategic harmonisation of dual cultural identities—Singaporean pragmatic excellence and Japanese artisanal devotion. Before redefining the luxury retail landscape in Singapore, Tan established himself as a "corporate warrior" in the high-stakes world of management consulting, IT, and finance. His decade-long tenure across the Asia-Pacific and Japan included roles at premier global firms, including Andersen, KPMG Consulting, Ernst & Young, and Standard Chartered Bank.
This institutional background provided a foundation in governance and operational rigour, now applied to the complex regulatory environment of Japanese property law. The transition to "retail visionary" was marked by the 2009 launch of atomi, co-founded with Mitsuko Murano. atomi was not merely a boutique; it was a cultural bridge that pioneered the "Japanese Designs x Comfortable Lifestyle" philosophy during a global economic crisis, establishing exclusive partnerships with heritage makers like Maruni, Hiromatsu, and Nissin.
Andrew's pedagogical contributions were extensive.
Andrew served as the inaugural lecturer and course developer for the Second Major in Entrepreneurship (SMiE) at NTU, where he personally created and delivered ET5213 Managing New Ventures (3 AU) and ET5211 Entrepreneurial Mindset and Technology Innovation (3 AU) for the first two cohorts. Furthermore, his capability to navigate diverse cultural and corporate paradigms is demonstrated by his role as a lecturer and course co-ordinator for the Entrepreneurial Mindset module within the Master of Science in Technopreneurship and Innovation Programme (MSc TIP) at NTU. These advanced postgraduate courses are conducted entirely bilingually—delivered in both English and Chinese. His relationship with the broader innovation ecosystem is evidenced by his role as a mentor to Enterprise Leadership Transformation (ELT) businesses.
Currently, Andrew is the industry partner for the Minor in Integrative Health (MIH), an interdisciplinary undergraduate program offered by the National University of Singapore (NUS) Medicine Faculty, focusing on holistic, patient-centred care by combining conventional medicine with complementary approaches.
